The Japanese automaker Mitsubishi has introduced the latest generation of its Outlander Sport crossover, which serves as a preview for the new ASX model.

Designed for the U.S. Market but Recognizable in Europe

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport has been tailored for the American market, though European buyers are familiar with it as the ASX.

While the U.S. has seen the old Outlander Sport (with a 2020 facelift) for the past 15 years, European customers recently received a new ASX model, albeit based on the Renault Captur.

A Glimpse at the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

Rumors had hinted at Mitsubishi developing an entirely new crossover, and now it’s here. This latest version of the Outlander Sport will initially be sold in Asia and South Africa.

The new model bears a strong resemblance to the Mitsubishi XForce concept, unveiled in Indonesia in 2023. It also shares design inspiration with the three-row Mitsubishi DST SUV concept, introduced at the 2024 Philippine International Motor Show.

The new Outlander Sport is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 103 horsepower to the front wheels via a CVT transmission—currently the only available drivetrain option.

The crossover offers a 228 mm ground clearance and impressive approach and departure angles of 21.0° and 30.5°, respectively.

Despite its front-wheel-drive configuration, Mitsubishi claims the vehicle is equipped to handle rough terrain, thanks to driving modes such as Wet, Gravel, and Mud. It also features Active Yaw Control, which enhances cornering stability and reduces uncomfortable movements at higher speeds.

Interior Highlights

The cabin of the new Outlander Sport boasts a modern design, featuring:

• A 12.3-inch central touchscreen.

• An 8.0-inch driver display, which can show off-road-specific data, such as elevation, direction, and tilt indicators (borrowed from the Mitsubishi Pajero).

• Soft-touch materials on the dashboard and tactile physical controls that complement the digital interface.

The rear seats fold down for extra cargo space, although Mitsubishi hasn’t disclosed the exact storage capacity yet.

Safety and Pricing

For Asian markets, the crossover offers basic safety features, including:

• Anti-lock brakes (ABS).

• Airbags.

• Blind-spot monitoring.

• Rear cross-traffic alert.

The starting price for the Outlander Sport is approximately $23,000. However, its availability in other regions, including the U.S., hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Global Perspective

In the U.S., the Outlander Sport remains a key offering in Mitsubishi’s lineup. Meanwhile, the ASX continues to be sold in Europe, priced at around $24,000 in Ukraine for the base Invite trim with a 1.6-liter engine.

Mitsubishi’s latest launch signals a fresh direction for the brand, aiming to blend rugged capabilities with modern technology for diverse markets.
